Scandinavia’s Green Roof Revival

The concept of a green roof is nothing new in Scandinavia, where homes have been covered with sod and bark since the age of the Vikings (and before). By the 19th century, modern materials (iron, slate, etc…) had replaced sod as the preferred roofing, except in remote areas. But in recent decades, the sod roof has seen a revival, where a pride in heritage and traditions is blending with a modern sustainability-inspired sensibility. Since 2000, an award is also given to the best green roof project in Scandinavia by the board of the Scandinavian Green Roof Association. Here are a few inspiring examples.
