Ford Fusion Gets 1445 Miles on A Single Tank
A lot has been made in recent weeks about Ford’s foresight- good ol’ fashioned forward-thinking that helped them avoid the same dismal fate as G.M. and Chrysler. Ford decided not to take federal bailout money, and they seem to have had a better handle on the small car/hybrid market that was emerging, demonstrated this week by the company’s “Ford Fusion 1,000 Mile Challenge.”
In an effort to promote their new Fusion Hybrid, Ford had NASCAR star Carl Edwards set off with green blogger Wayne Gerdes, and several Ford engineers on single tank of gas. After about 48 hours of driving through greater Washington DC, the car finally ran out of juice after an amazing 1445.7 miles, having averaged a staggering 81.5 miles-per-gallon. They applied basic hypermilling techniques such as slow acceleration, coasting when possible, avoiding potholes, and using the heat and A/C as little as possible as well as keeping the windows closed.
By the way, the record is 2,254.4 miles on a single tank of fuel set in a 2001 Honda Insight Hybrid in 2006.
