It’s hard to imagine life before mobile phones, particularly when traveling. When on the go, a cell phone has become as basic an accessory as a pair of shoes. Just think of the chorus of beeps and buzzes that fill the cabin, as airline travelers scramble to switch on their phones after landing. Soon, it might be difficult to imagine life before carbon calculators such as Carbon Diem. The new software, from London-based startup Carbon Hero, turns your mobile phone into a carbon calculator. Carbon Diem uses Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) to calculate the user’s movements, and the software is designed to distinguish between walking, driving, riding on a train or flying, thereby providing remarkably accurate calculations. Andreas Zachariah, the system’s inventor and CEO of Carbon Hero, claims the software represents the world’s first automated carbon calculator. The goal, says Zachariah, is to provide users with a more complete picure of their environmental impact and, if they choose, modify their behavior to lower-carbon alternatives.
