It was a big week for imagining the future of Europe’s roadways. In an earlier post, we looked at the European Council’s backing of standardized hydrogen technology on new cars and a proposed network of hydrogen filling stations throughout Europe.  Now, Daimler is teaming with German utility RWE to create a network of more than 500 battery-charging stations, in yet one more sign that Europeans have hitched their automotive wagon to alternative energies. In a related story to our previous post on the proposed North Sea “transnational power grid,” scientists in Japan are exploring the feasibility of an ambitious off-shore network of floating power plants. According to the scientists from Kyushu University, these giant at-sea generators, nick-named Eco-Rigs, would utilize photovoltaic (solar) and turbine technologies to generate as much power as a nuclear facility. Japan has virtually no fossil fuels, and the country’s faith in nuclear power has quite literally been shaken. An earthquake caused its largest nuclear plant to shut down in 2007 and engineers and seismic experts cautioned that the country’s high susceptibility to quakes placed the industry at risk. Scientists here in the United States have explored similar plans.
